What is the aim of the North Devon Rugby League website?
This site is a way of advertising the new NORTH DEVON RAIDERS Rugby League Club which has been formed to enter the co-operative Rugby League Conference, which runs in the Rugby Union off season of May, June, July and August. If you are interested in playing, coaching, supporting or generally helping out with the new club please contact us HERE.
Where will the club be based?

The Raiders are pleased to announce that we will be using the fine facilities of Barnstaple Rugby Club at Pottington Road, Barnstaple.
The ground has a large main stand, a smaller North Stand and a luxurious clubhose which the Rugby Club has generously agreed to provide for us on training and matchdays.

Who would the new club play? Rugby League is a "northern" game isn't it?
The club is a member of the Rugby League Conference which provides a game almost every weekend during May, June, July and August. There are currently eight clubs in the South Western Division of the RLC with the inclusion of new entrants (along with the Raiders) South Somerset Warriors from Yeovil.
How much would the players be paid, Rugby League is professional isn't it?
The Rugby League Conference is considered to be an "open" competition as opposed to an "amateur" competition. Whilst there is the provision for players to be paid, none of the clubs in the South West pay their players to pay. In contrast, the players pay to play, either by a membership fee or weekly match fees. Although, as has been stated many times on this site, nothing has been set in stone, it would be unlikely that players for a North Devon Rugby League Club would be paid to play.
What is the minimum age for players?
The minimum age for players to play in the Rugby League Conference at Open Age is 17. Some of the clubs in the region are starting junior sections at the moment and, if there is no junior side in the North Devon area, under 17's could probably be accomodated at other clubs in the county.
Where can I find out more about Rugby League?
There are numerous places to find out more about Rugby League. The official Rugby Football League (RFL) website HERE, the Rugby League Conference website HERE, the engage Super League website HERE and the wikipedia Rugby League page HERE are good places to start.

Is it just "park football"? What opportunities are there in Rugby League?
There are opportunities for players to go as far as they want in Rugby League depending on their ambition and obviously ability. Above the Club level games in the Rugby League Conference there are regional representative sides (South West) leading to the South of England side which challenges the North of England and plays games against the RAF, Royal Navy etc and then the full England Lionhearts side which plays in the Home Nations Championship against Scotland, Ireland and Wales and in the Skanska Cup. There are also plans for outgoing tours - the Lionheats have played in Malta and Serbia in recent years. Plymouth have had two players selected for the England Lionhearts (Matt Tichias and Martin Browne) as have Devon Sharks (Matt Jackson) and East Devon (Tony Emmins) since the South West Division was formed. Further than that, Darrell Griffin was playing for the Oxford Cavaliers in the Rugby League Conference when he was spotted and now plays for Huddersfield Giants in the engage Super League and was on the fringes of the England squad for the 2008 World Cup in Australia.
